Throckmorton Fine Art is pleased to present Lucien Clergue: A Life Through the Lens, an exhibition of forty-four photographs made between 1953 and 2012.

Born in Arles in 1934, Clergue photographed the city’s corridas and its street performers as a young man, and in 1953 showed his work to Picasso, who became a lifelong friend and advocate. He went on to build one of the most distinctive bodies of work in postwar French photography: the nudes of the Camargue and of the sea, the salt flats and marshes around Beauduc and Faraman, and the bullfights of the Midi. In 1970 he founded the Rencontres d’Arles, the annual photography festival that helped establish the city as a centre of the medium, and in 2006 he became the first photographer elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts.

The exhibition follows that arc — from the early images of Arles, the bullfight series and the portraits of Picasso and Jean Cocteau, through the nudes and the landscapes of the Camargue, to late works such as Langage des sables and Signes des sables — and includes a 2012 portrait of Clergue by his friend Aldo Sessa.

Works are gelatin silver prints unless otherwise noted, and are available for purchase. Inventory numbers appear in the checklist.
